Ride the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway

There’s a reason cycling enthusiasts love the Willamette Valley so much. It’s unbelievably scenic, and the roads perfectly blend flat and hilly. The area – and its businesses – are also bike friendly, making it easy to get out for a full day of adventure on two wheels. 

One of our favorite ways to explore the area’s bounty is to cycle the 134 impressive miles along the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway. It offers riders a fantastic introduction to cycling in the valley, but more than that, it’s also an immersive introduction to the area’s agricultural and cultural history, all while soaking up the famous scenery around every bend. 

The Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway was the country’s first official scenic bikeway. The trail meanders along the Willamette River, with the dramatic Coast and Cascade mountain ranges on either side. As you make your way down these scenic 134 miles, you’ll gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the agricultural powerhouse that is the valley. 

We encourage you to really take your time to explore the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway. It will take you through quaint towns and past leading vineyards and wineries. Make sure you visit a few tasting rooms and sample the delicious wines produced here! Talk about an excellent respite for your tired legs! 

The northern point of the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway is Champoeg State Park. From there, it passes Willamette Mission State Park before continuing to Salem. Continue further south on the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, and you’ll find yourself in the Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge and some of the best scenery on the entire trail. 

The trail continues through towns like Albany and Corvallis, all worthy of exploration. The steepest climb on the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway is around 600 feet in elevation and comes just south of Brownsville. Soon after, you’ll reach the southern terminus of the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway at Armitage County Park just outside Eugene.

The Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway can easily be a multi-day adventure, with stops at area campgrounds and hotels. Or, you can break the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway into smaller rides, perfect for deeper exploration.
